Chive is operated by Parry Technology and Media LLC, a District of Columbia limited liability company doing business as Chive. These terms are an agreement between you and that company, and they cover the Chive website at chive.recipes, the Chive iOS app, the Chive browser extensions, and Chive by text. By using Chive you accept them; if you do not, please do not use Chive. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle information and is part of the deal.
Chive is a recipe-search service. It indexes factual recipe information — names, ingredients, times, yields, and nutrition we calculate ourselves — from publicly available publisher pages, and it identifies and links to the original publisher on every public recipe. When an account actively imports a specific recipe, Chive may show that account concise factual cooking steps derived from the source; those steps are private to that account and are not published in search results. Search works without an account. Optional accounts add saved recipes, cooking history, grocery lists, meal plans, kitchens, profiles, a personalized Home feed, and personalized ranking.
We are not affiliated with the publishers we index, and they do not endorse Chive. Their recipes, photographs, and writing remain theirs. For the full recipe, the story behind it, and the author’s own tips, follow the link to their page — that is what it is there for.
If you publish recipes and would like to control or stop Chive’s crawler, or have your recipes removed from Chive, see chive.recipes/bot. It documents how our crawler identifies itself, how it honors robots.txt and page-level directives, and a removal channel with published response times. We act on removal requests without requiring a legal notice.
You must be at least 13 years old to create a Chive account, and able to form a binding agreement where you live. Chive is not directed to children under 13. You are responsible for the email address and third-party sign-in accounts you use, for keeping your login secure, and for activity under your account. Chive accounts are for people, one account per person; do not create accounts for others or by automated means.
An account stores your saved recipes, cooking history, grocery lists, meal plans, and profile so those features work across devices. If personalization is on, Chive learns from what you do in Chive — what you save, cook, plan, skip, and search for, and your food profile — in order to rank results and your Home feed for you. You can turn personalization off, clear what has been learned while keeping your saved recipes and lists, or delete your account outright from Settings.
Anything you put into Chive — recipes you import, photos, pasted text, dictation, list items, plan entries, your food profile — stays yours. So that Chive can work, you give us permission to store it, process it (including with the automated and third-party AI services described in the Privacy Policy, where you have consented to them), display it back to you, show a private recipe to anyone who opens a link to it, and, for items you add to a kitchen, show it to the other members of that kitchen. That permission lasts as long as the content is in Chive and ends when you delete it or your account, except for content you contributed to a kitchen, which stays with the kitchen as described below. You must have the right to submit what you send us, and you are responsible for it.
A kitchen lets a household share a grocery list and a meal plan. You may belong to one kitchen at a time, and you join with an invite code that expires, has a limited number of uses, and can be revoked. Only invite people you actually want to share with: anyone who joins can see, add to, edit, and check off everything on the shared list and household plan, and can see which member did what.
Shared content belongs to the kitchen rather than to whoever typed it. If you leave or delete your account, what you contributed stays with the kitchen for the remaining members, with your name removed. An owner must hand the kitchen to another member before leaving, and the last member out takes the kitchen with them — it and its contents are deleted. Your saved recipes, collections, private imports, cooking history, and food profile are never shared with a kitchen. You are responsible for what you add to a shared kitchen and for who you invite into it.
You can create private recipes from photos you take, text you paste or type, dictation, or a link you share. You must have the right to submit what you send us, and you must not use imports to copy and republish someone else’s work. Imported recipes are never added to public search. Each has its own link: anyone you share it with, and anyone they pass it to, can open the recipe (not your original photos or text), so share only what you have the right to share. Imported recipes are deleted when you delete them or your account. Chive uses automated systems, including third-party AI services, to read imports and extract recipe details; see the Privacy Policy for who processes what. You can withdraw consent for new AI imports at any time. Imports are limited per account per day, and extraction is automated, so a result can be incomplete or wrong; check it before you cook from it.
If you text a recipe link to Chive, you consent to receive automated replies about that request at the number you used. Message frequency varies, and standard message and data rates apply. Reply STOP to end messages and HELP for help. Consent to texts is not a condition of using Chive.
Chive is free to use, and version 1.0 of the iOS app contains no in-app purchases. If we introduce a paid membership later, we will show you the price, what it includes, and the billing terms before you pay, and we will update these terms. Any paid features will be Chive’s own, such as how many recipes you can keep in your library or how far ahead you can plan; recipe information from publishers will never sit behind a paywall. Purchases made through the App Store are billed, renewed, and refunded by Apple under Apple’s terms, and can be cancelled in your App Store subscription settings. If we ever offer purchases outside the App Store, we will name the payment processor and the way to cancel before you pay.
If you install the Chive app from Apple’s App Store, Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to the app; where it conflicts with these terms for the app itself, it controls. Apple is not a party to these terms, is not responsible for the app or for providing support or maintenance for it, and is not responsible for addressing any claim relating to the app or your use of it. Apple and its subsidiaries may enforce these terms against you as a third-party beneficiary. Browser extensions are subject to the additional policies of the store you install them from.
Nutrition figures in Chive are estimates calculated from ingredient data, not measurements of the food you actually cook, and they may be wrong. Chive is general information, not medical, dietary, or nutritional advice, and it does not diagnose or treat anything. Always check the ingredient list yourself for allergies and dietary restrictions, and talk to a qualified professional about decisions that affect your health.
We store the account, profile, saved recipes, cooking history, lists, plans, and imports needed to run the features you use. Your profile description is encrypted. We keep first-party measurements of how Chive is used so we can improve it, and short-lived security records so we can protect it; both are described in the Privacy Policy, along with how to turn measurement off. We do not sell your personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. The Privacy Policy sets out what we collect, why, who processes it, how long we keep it, and how to delete it.
Do not abuse the service. That includes scraping, crawling, or bulk-copying Chive; attempting to reach other users’ data or kitchens you were not invited to; interfering with, overloading, or probing the service; reverse engineering the apps or extensions; reselling or sublicensing access; using Chive to infringe anyone’s rights; submitting content that is unlawful, harmful, or that you do not have the right to submit; or using Chive unlawfully. Publishers who want to control how Chive reads their sites should use the process at chive.recipes/bot.
Chive is free, and searches, imports, and AI processing cost real money to run. To keep the service available and fair for everyone, we apply usage limits — per account, per app install, or per network address — to things like login-code requests, searches, imports, dictation, and API calls, and daily caps on some features. The limits may change as the product does. Do not try to get around them: no bots, scripts, or automated clients against Chive’s apps or APIs, no multiple accounts to multiply your allowance, and no sharing of one account among several people. If you hit a limit, wait and try again. We may throttle, suspend, or close accounts that circumvent limits or otherwise abuse the service, and we may keep records connected to an abuse incident for as long as it takes to resolve it.
We respect the rights of recipe authors and publishers. If you are a publisher, the fastest route is chive.recipes/bot, which needs no legal notice. If you believe any content in Chive infringes your copyright, email support@chive.recipes with a description of the work, where it appears in Chive, your contact details, and a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorized. We will remove or disable access to material we determine to be infringing, and we may close the accounts of repeat infringers.
Chive is offered as it is. Features may change, and we may add, alter, or withdraw them. We may update these terms as the product evolves; the date at the top will change and material changes will be announced in the product before they take effect. Continuing to use Chive after that means you accept the updated terms.
You can stop using Chive at any time, and you can delete your account yourself from Settings in the app or Preferences on the web; the Privacy Policy explains what is deleted and what a kitchen keeps. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, that we reasonably believe is being used for abuse or fraud, or where the law requires it, and we may withdraw the service as a whole with reasonable notice. The sections on your content, disclaimers and liability, governing law, and general terms survive the end of the relationship.
To the fullest extent the law allows, Chive is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, and we disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that recipe information, nutrition estimates, imported recipes, or search results are accurate, complete, or suitable for you.
To the fullest extent the law allows, Parry Technology and Media LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits or data, arising from your use of Chive. Our total liability for any claim relating to Chive will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or one hundred United States dollars. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limits, in which case they apply to the extent permitted.
These terms are governed by the laws of the District of Columbia, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in the District of Columbia, and you and we consent to their jurisdiction. Nothing here prevents either of us from seeking relief in a small-claims court.
These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Chive. If any part is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term right away, we have not given it up. You may not transfer your account or these terms to anyone else; we may transfer them as part of a sale or reorganization of the business, in which case they continue to apply. Apart from Apple as described above, nobody else has rights under these terms.
